What is Aid For Individual Development?

Aid For Individual Development is a nonprofit organization based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Established in 1979 by the Oklahoma County Council for Mentally Retarded Citizens (OCCMRC), its primary mission is to provide residential services for individuals with developmental disabilities. Through funding from the HUD Section 202 and Section 8 programs, the organization constructed two accessible facilities equipped with shared bathrooms, living spaces, recreational areas, and communal kitchens. Residents learn daily living skills under the guidance of house managers, ultimately aiming for independence and self-sufficiency, leading to their own apartments. The program, funded by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services and food payments from tenants, also covers the operational costs of the homes, which are partly covered by tenant rents and Section 8 subsidies.

Mission Statement of Aid For Individual Development

Aid For Individual Development, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to providing residential services for individuals with developmental disabilities. The mission of this organization is to teach these residents essential daily living skills, empowering them to strive for independence and secure their own apartments. For many years, the parents and members of the Oklahoma County Council for Mentally Retarded Citizens (OCCMRC) dreamt of offering such services. In April 1979, Aid was established as a separate non-profit corporation by OCCMRC, with funding for the construction of two residential facilities obtained through HUD Section 202 financing. Each home, completed in 1981, consists of 12 single-occupancy bedrooms, shared bathrooms, a living room, recreation room, congregate kitchen and dining facility, and a semi-private sitting room, all accommodating the physically handicapped. The house managers at Aid teach residents daily living skills, encouraging self-reliance. Residents are expected to contribute to their living environment by doing chores such as laundry and cooking, ultimately working towards their goal of independent living in their own apartments.
