Mission Statement of The Women's Law Center Of Md Inc

The Women's Law Center of MD is committed to ensuring the physical safety, economic security, and autonomy of women throughout the state. To achieve this goal, the organization provides direct legal representation, information and referral services, and legislative advocacy.

The center's Protection Order Advocacy & Representation Project (POARP) represents victims of domestic violence at protection order hearings in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Carroll County. POARP attorneys provide representation to individuals who have been abused by their intimate partners, helping them obtain protection orders, enforce existing orders, and modify existing protection orders. The organization also offers advocacy and education to survivors of domestic violence in immigrant communities through its Multi-Ethnic Domestic Violence Project (MEDOVI). MEDOVI provides representation to foreign-born victims of domestic violence in Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) self-petitions, VAWA battered spouse waivers, and interim U-visa applications.

In addition to these projects, The Women's Law Center of MD's Collateral Legal Assistance for Survivors (CLAS) project provides legal representation to victims of domestic violence in collateral, primarily family-law related issues. CLAS represents victims in divorce and custody proceedings, landlord/tenant matters, replevin cases, and criminal accompaniments. By retaining the attorney-client relationship after the protective order hearing for collateral issues, CLAS is able to provide client-centered and culturally sensitive services, preventing the re-traumatization of clients who would otherwise be forced to relive and retell their stories to new attorneys or, more often, cannot find representation at all for these ongoing issues.
