In collaboration with Trilogy, a community mental health trilogy, NAMI Chicago has been contracted by the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS) to provide outreach and peer support to residents at Illinois nursing facilities categorized as Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) and Specialized Mental Health Rehabilitation Facilities (SMHRFs) in Cook County. Outreach workers explain the rights of these residents under the Williams and Colbert Consent Decrees and offer support and hope during times of transition. The Williams vs. Pritzker lawsuit and the Colbert vs. Pritzker lawsuit found the state of Illinois in violation of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The settlements commit the state of Illinois to developing more supportive housing and offering SMHRF and SNF residents the opportunity to live and receive services in integrated, community settings.
