Weston United Community Renewal Inc

Weston United Community Renewal, inc., a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to assisting mentally ill homeless adults in achieving health and independence. Based in Harlem, this organization provides housing, social support, and training/employment opportunities to help these individuals live independently in the community.

Weston's residential services are extensive and designed to help individuals develop or strengthen the skills necessary for independent living. Among its programs are the Weston Transitional Living Community (TLC), a shelter for 40 homeless and mentally ill men and women, and Bishop House, a 20-unit apartment building for mentally ill men and women. Both TLC and Bishop House have 24-hour staff, including psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, case managers, counselors, and support staff. Operating funds for TLC are provided by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS), while Bishop House is licensed by the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) as a congregate treatment program.

Additionally, Weston operates Weston House, an apartment treatment program licensed by OMH, which serves 48 mentally ill men and women in an apartment building with 24-hour staff. The program is supported by OMH and bills Medicaid for providing restorative services. Weston also operates BRONX STAR, a 50-person scatter-site apartment program that supports men and women who have completed substance abuse treatment programs and are at risk of homelessness. Participants are helped to maintain sobriety while stabilizing in the community and seeking employment to move into permanent housing. Participants are referred by DHS, and funding is provided by DOHMH. Lastly, Weston's Supportive Housing Program supports 98 individuals with mental illness in leased apartments rented in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx. Rental subsidies and case managers who are on 24-hour call are supported through grants from OMH and DOHMH.
